Osmotic adaptation of sea-urchin spermatozoa.

چکیده
Spermatozoa depend on their motility to accomplish their function of fertili¬ zation. In the case of sea-urchins and other marine organisms, the ionic com¬ position of sea-water is among the environmental factors that affect motility and longevity (Bishop, 1962). We have started studies of specific ion concen¬ tration changes in the sea-water as they affect the motility of sea-urchin spermatozoa. Differences are reported here in the motility of spermatozoa depending on whether the male sea-urchins had been kept in either hypo-osmotic or isosmotic

A monoclonal antibody against the dynein IC1 peptide of sea urchin spermatozoa inhibits the motility of sea urchin, dinoflagellate, and human flagellar axonemes.
To investigate the role of axonemal components in the mechanics and regulation of flagellar movement, we have generated a series of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) against sea urchin (Lytechinus pictus) sperm axonemal proteins, selected for their ability to inhibit the motility of demembranated sperm models. One of these antibodies, mAb D1, recognizes an antigen of 142 kDa on blots of sea urchin ax...
متن کاملThe Physiology of Sea-urchin Spermatozoa
Since Gray showed in 1928 that dilute suspensions of sea-urchin spermatozoa respire at a higher rate, per spermatozoon, than dense suspensions, evidence has been accumulating which suggests that sea-urchin spermatozoa are in different physiological conditions in suspensions of different densities. This paper is concerned with these differences and, in particular, with the effects of rigorous pH...
متن کاملThe Physiology of Sea-urchin Spermatozoa Action of Versene
A description of the physiology of sea-urchin spermatozoa requires, among other things, an explanation of two special characteristics which these spermatozoa possess. First, immediately after dilution, the Og uptake per spermatozoon is higher in a dilute than in a dense suspension. Secondly, the decline in sperm motility and fertilizing capacity is more rapid in a dilute than in a dense suspens...
متن کاملSperm Receptivity in Sea Urchin Oocytes and Eggs
An electrophysiological method for studying the receptivity to spermatozoa of sea urchin eggs and oocytes is described. Pairs of adjacent oocytes and eggs, with intact jelly layers, were impaled and simultaneously exposed to a known concentration of spermatozoa. Two parameters were studied. The time from insemination to the first successful collision (as indicated by a step depolarization acros...
